A major safety project is underway this summer at Willard Airport, realigning a taxiway that connects the airline terminal, FlightStar, and the Parkland College Institute of Aviation with two of the Airport’s runways. The taxiway had what inspectors called, “non-standard geometry.” In other words, it connected to the runways in spots that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determined could be confusing for pilots.
The new layout will be much more clear for pilots, and allow them to access the runways at key points, without potentially going across a runway without realizing it. While there haven’t been any incidents with the previous layout, the new layout better meets upcoming regulations.
The $10.4 million project is funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
