One of the most frustrating parts of running an airline terminal is keeping the escalators running – especially when they are decades old. In fact, the escalators are original to the construction of the terminal in 1988. It’s no fun for passengers, with heavy carry-ons, when the escalators are down.
That’s why Willard has prioritized new escalators in the next phase of its terminal improvement program. Based on available funding, the Airport plans to replace both escalators and two elevators by 2028. The project will also include new terminal entrance doors and a new terminal façade. The airport will also pursue new windows throughout the terminal, and new lighting in the public area, if funds are available.
Terminal improvements should start in 2027.
Before that begins, the Airport will reconstruct the terminal’s secondary entrance road and employee parking lot. Cross Construction will complete the work this coming summer, the project budget is $500,000. There will be no impact on passengers while construction is underway, and the entire project should be completed quickly once started.
Additionally, the terminal roof system that was partially damaged by a severe storm in 2023, is nearing full replacement. Olympic Construction and Advanced Commercial Roofing, Inc. (ACR) joined University of Illinois trades to complete the work. The Airport spent $200,000 to replace the final section of roof, completing a fully new roofing system with an expected life of 30 years.
